20090521 Kigali

I worked in Kigali for 13 months… this capital of Rwanda is small. Its cleanliness gives very good first impression to foreigners. It’s not cheap to live here. Those services targeted the foreigners are expensive.

There are supermarkets, entertainments and plenty of restaurants in Kigali. The city center is pretty small. Not much things to see and to buy… would disappoint shopaholic and casual tourists… Considering the general low income of the populations, shopping choices & entertainment are less than desirable.

The air pollution is mainly contributed by the inefficient diesel engine of the old junk vehicles, otherwise the air is really refreshing.
(the photos below are partly collected from my colleagues and friends).

I stayed in this company guesthouse for a few months. It's located in prime area. Such nice buildings are scarce out of Kigali.

Our office is on the 3rd floor.

General view of Kigali. Many high rise buildings are being planned and under construction.

Residential area over the hills. Majority of the houses are like this.

This is very common too.

Kigali Memorial Centre, no photographing is permitted inside the building. The history of genocide is recorded.

Mass grave in Memorial Centre. The skeletons collected from different places were buried here.

"Never Again"... No more genocide...

"Umuganda" - a communal activity held on the last Saturday of every month, everyone is encouraged to contribute effort to the country e.g. cleaning, building schools, clearing farms etc. A very good idea!

KaraOK... in the best Chinese restaurant in Kigali. Song choices are limited, but much better than nothing.
