Sofia, the largest
city of Bulgaria is pleasingly compact. Sitting on a 545m high plateau at the
foot of Mt Vitosha, Sofia is the highest capital in Europe. The country is
marching towards “westernization” following the demise of communism.
Most
sights are handily located in the compact city center. The massive,
awe-inspiring Aleksander Nevski Memorial Church is the icon of Bulgaria. It was
built between 1882-1912 as a memorial to the 200,000 Russian soldiers who died
fighting for Bulgaria’s independence during the Russian-Turkish War (1877-78).
Rest of the sights do not trigger my interest due to my poor knowledge on this
country
