20120225 Avila

My mood was heightened the moment seeing the imposing city walls of Avila fortress. Comprised of 8 monumental gates, 88 watchtowers and more than 2500 turrets, it’s one of the best-preserved bastions in Spain.

Plenty of accommodation choices within the city walls – pre-booking is advised. I had a very good bargain at one slightly away from the centre for only EUR25.

Convinced by Lonely Planet’s comment, I walked into the imposing Cathedral of Avila. No regret, indeed it was quite special and among the most beautiful ones that I'd seen in Spain, but photographing was not allowed.

I was not aware of the city wall would be closing at 6pm during winter, too late… I missed it. While blaming myself not checking the visiting hour, I walked around the external peripheral walls instead. Unexpected always turned out enjoyable. Beautiful! The preservation was excellently done. The yellow walls were shimmering under the sunset rays. The view around the city from here was unbeatable. At night the floodlit fortress was glowing like a glittering golden bar. This fairy tale like atmosphere is unforgettable.
