2hr drive from Berlin. Assisted by the extreme friendly lady at tourist
info centre, I bought a 2-day pass, EUR25 (incl many museums + free city
transport).
Most of the museums were close on Monday.
Residence Schloss was the main choice. Exhibits were no doubt very fine but not
so interesting to me - goblet, gifts, boxes, swords etc.
Frauenkirch, not so special compared to
those I had seen in Spain. It was destroyed during the war.
Museum of Military, the exhibits were as expected,
having huge collection, but the War Photography agitated me the most, recorded
the civil wars of Indonesian, Rwanda, Chechnya, Serbia... not many photos but
sufficiently conveying the messages.
Zwinger, another must-see in Dresden. The
porcelain exhibition, mainly from China, Japan and Meissan, collected by
Augustus the Strong, was compact and good quality but not my cup of tea. The Galerie
Alter Meister was a better place, quite a large collection but mostly biblical
paintings. The Sistine Madonna of Rafael was the highlight.
Albertinum (Galerie Neue Meister), not
many displays in sculpture hall. The most interesting is "The
Thinker" by Auguste Rodin 1881-84, looks good, muscular, maybe the hands
and legs are slightly too big. The painting gallery keeps lots of modern
paintings, no more biblical scenes. Some were really excellent. Has 1x Picaso,
2x Gauguin, 2x Monet. Worth for a visit.
